書籍:「ニュース英語 Make it!」

この本も図書館で借りてきました。本のタイトルの「ニュース英語」は、リスニングではなく英字新聞、時事英語、ニュース英語を「読む」ことをメインとしています。従って、英字新聞などで特有の文法、関係代名詞の省略、冠詞の省略、略語、数字の複数形、助動詞would notの活用など、ポイントを解説しています。この手の本は、時事英語なので載っている単語、内容が最新でないと意味がないですが、この本は図書館で借りた2003年度版なので内容が少し古いです。(イラン、イラクと米国の関係やフロッピーディスクなども載っています。)今は改訂版があると思います。コンパクトで内容も良く、英字新聞などをこれから読もうという方には役に立つ入門書だと思います。

TIMEやニュース関係の記事を読んで理解するには、単語を1つ1つ暗記しようとしても日常で会話で使う言葉とは違い、なかなか覚えられません。そこで単語を「戦争、災害、経済、政治、経済、災害、戦争、事件」関係の単語にざっくり分け、ニュース記事でよく使われる基本的な単語で例文を下記のように作って覚えました。「主語が~である、~であった、~と思われる。」とシンプルな文です。
